The Binder Collection - 2

From the point of view of research, there are fascinating fabrics to be explored, spanning several centuries.

Because of the Hebrew inscriptions, many of the binders can be reliably dated and in most cases, the exact place of origin is known. Since such accurately dated textiles do not exist in the non-Jewish field, the binders provide a unique source for a comparative study of folk textiles.

Most of the circumcision binders in this collection are simply embroidered with red or pink silk, in stem- or chain-stitch. The very ornate and elaborate examples in an array of colours remained in Prague and can be seen at the Jewish Museum there.
